Discuss your Tasmania self-drive itinerary

Start with the holiday you want: a relaxed food and wine journey, a golf escape with time for non-golfers, or a longer exploration of Tasmania’s coast and countryside. We will discuss the planning and booking support you need before confirming a proposal.
A thoughtful route, with room to enjoy it
The right itinerary balances memorable days with realistic travel time. Staying several nights in each region gives you more freedom to linger over lunch, change plans with the weather and enjoy your accommodation.
Seven days works well for a focused journey through Hobart, the east coast and Launceston. Ten days allows longer stays or another region; fourteen days creates space for a wider circuit. The route should follow your arrival and departure arrangements, interests and preferred pace.

A seven-day Tasmania itinerary: Hobart, Freycinet and Launceston
This example uses six nights across three bases: two in Hobart, two in Coles Bay and two in Launceston. It is a planning example, with accommodation, activities and any golf subject to availability.
Days 1–2: Settle into Hobart
Allow the arrival day for settling in and exploring the waterfront. On your second day, choose a southern experience: golf, a food and wine day, or time for the city’s art and history. Keep a full golf day clear rather than combining it with an ambitious sightseeing schedule.
For a golf focus, explore our Hobart golf course guide. If everyone would like to enjoy tastings, discuss a private wine day or suitable Hobart private transfers instead of driving yourselves that day.

Day 3: Hobart to Coles Bay
Head to the east coast and spend the next two nights around Coles Bay. Tourism Tasmania’s indicative direct drive is approximately 193 kilometres and 2 hours 35 minutes; allow substantially longer for breaks and coastal stops. Avoid scheduling a fixed activity immediately after the drive.
Day 4: A full day around Freycinet
Choose an experience that suits your interests and participation needs: coastal scenery, a suitably graded walk or a pre-booked water-based activity. Wineglass Bay Lookout is a steep Grade 3 walk with many steps, not an effortless lookout stop. Check current park advice and activity availability when planning, and arrange the required parks pass.
Day 5: Coles Bay to Launceston
Move north to Launceston for two nights. The indicative direct journey is approximately 175 kilometres and 2 hours 10 minutes via the Lake Leake Highway. Treat this as driving time before stops, and allow for weather, road conditions and your accommodation’s check-in arrangements.
Day 6: Choose your northern day
Spend the day exploring the Tamar Valley, or make golf the focus. A northern golf day needs its own travel allowance and a confirmed tee time; it should not be squeezed between a full winery programme and an early flight. If Barnbougle is a priority, discuss whether staying closer to the courses would create a better trip.
Our Tasmania golf tours and packages can help you compare a fully organised golf journey with a more independent holiday.

Day 7: Depart from Launceston
Keep the final day flexible around your flight and vehicle return. If you need to return to Hobart, add a separate travel allowance or another night rather than treating the two airports as interchangeable. One-way vehicle collection and return arrangements must be checked with the rental provider.
Golf, wine and scenic experiences — tailored to your interests
Tell us which experiences matter most and which days you want to keep free. Golf access and tee times depend on each course’s booking conditions and availability. King Island requires separate air travel arrangements; it is not part of a continuous road itinerary around Tasmania.
You can also discuss a private guided day or transfer for a particular part of the journey. LGST’s chauffeured fleet is a separate service from a self-drive rental vehicle.
Before we shape your itinerary
Please share your travel dates, arrival and departure points, number of travellers, preferred accommodation style, approximate budget, golf interests and any participation or accessibility requirements. Tell us whether you want route planning, help with selected bookings, or a broader proposal. The scope of our service and the responsibilities for each booking will be agreed before you proceed.
Driving times are indicative and exclude stops. Check current road and weather advice, plan rural drives in daylight where possible and download offline maps. For wine days, choose a designated driver or arrange suitable transport.

Planning your self-drive holiday: FAQs
What can you help plan for a Tasmania self-drive holiday?
We can discuss your route, overnight bases and the golf, wine and scenic experiences you want to include. Tell us whether you need itinerary advice, help with selected bookings or a broader proposal. We agree the service scope and responsibilities for each booking before you proceed.
Is a rental car included?
LGST’s chauffeured fleet is a separate service from a self-drive rental vehicle. Any rental vehicle arrangement, price, insurance, driver requirements and collection or return conditions must be confirmed with the chosen rental provider.
How much does self-drive itinerary planning cost?
Your proposal reflects your travel dates, group size and the planning or booking support you need. We will confirm the service scope and any costs before you choose to proceed.
Can you help plan a 7, 10 or 14-day Tasmania holiday?
Yes. Seven days suits a focused journey such as Hobart, Freycinet and Launceston. Ten or fourteen days allows more time in each region or an additional destination. We shape the route around your arrival and departure points, interests and preferred pace.
Can we combine golf with wine and sightseeing?
Yes. Tell us your preferred courses and the experiences that matter to golfers and non-golfers in your group. Course access, tee times, accommodation and activities remain subject to booking conditions and availability. For tasting days, choose a designated driver or discuss suitable private transport.
