7 Mile Beach Golf Tasmania: The Complete Guide for Visiting Golfers

There are golf courses you add to a holiday, and others that give you a reason to plan one.

With fairways threading through coastal dunes and the sea shaping the setting, 7 Mile Beach belongs firmly in the conversation when planning a Tasmania golf trip. Its 18-hole South Course brings links golf to Hobart’s doorstep, combining a striking landscape with remarkably convenient airport access.

The attraction is not simply another course to tick off. It is the opportunity to build a holiday around great golf, comfortable accommodation, memorable meals and time together, without spending every spare hour organising the next movement.

Whether you are visiting for a Hobart golf weekend or combining southern Tasmania with Barnbougle, this guide covers the course, practical planning and ways to make the journey as enjoyable as the golf.

The story behind 7 Mile Beach

The project began with Tasmanian professional golfer Mathew Goggin’s belief that the dunes near his home deserved a golf course. Beneath plantation pines lay the contours and sandy ground that would eventually shape his vision. Bringing it to life required years of planning, approvals and persistence.

Mike Clayton and Mike DeVries designed the South Course, which opened its full 18 holes for public play in December 2025.

That background gives 7 Mile Beach a distinctly personal character. This was not simply a convenient place to build golf. It was a landscape someone had imagined playing for years.

For visiting golfers, the result offers a compelling reason to give Hobart a place in a wider Tasmanian itinerary, rather than treating it only as an arrival or departure point.

What makes the South Course different?

At 7 Mile Beach, the interest comes from the land as much as the hazards. The layout moves between elevated dunes, sheltered valleys and holes close to the shoreline. Short grass around the greens creates choices: play through the air, use the slopes, or keep the ball travelling along the ground.

One particularly distinctive feature is the par-four eighth, which has two separate greens. The green in use changes the challenge and influences the next hole’s tee options. Meanwhile, the short par-four tenth asks golfers to think about position and approach angle rather than simply reaching for the longest club.

This is a course worth approaching with curiosity. Choose tees that suit your game, pay attention to the wind and resist the temptation to judge every shot by distance alone.

Consider allowing room for a second round. Golf Club Atlas’s detailed course review highlights how repeated play can reveal the strategic value of its contours and playing lines. A return visit gives you the chance to try the shot you only recognised after walking past it.

Where is 7 Mile Beach Golf Course?

The course is at 300 Pittwater Road, Seven Mile Beach, east of Hobart. Its official website gives approximate driving times of ten minutes from Hobart Airport and 25 minutes from Hobart’s city centre.

Those short distances make a Hobart base attractive, but driving time is not the same as time from touchdown to the first tee. Allow for disembarking, collecting golf bags, meeting your driver, checking in and preparing for your round.

The final approach also deserves attention. Official directions include approximately five kilometres of gravel road beyond Pittwater Road. Follow the course’s current arrival instructions and signs rather than navigating only to the beach or suburb.

For arrival-day golf, our recommendation is simple: confirm the tee time and transfer plan before committing to flights. For departure-day golf, leave a comfortable margin after the round. An airport nearby should make the day easier, not encourage an unnecessarily tight schedule.

Booking tee times and checking green fees

7 Mile Beach welcomes Tasmanian, interstate and international golfers. Tee-time requests are available through its official booking system, with larger groups directed to contact the course. At the time of writing, the booking page lists play on every day except Tuesday; check the current calendar before choosing dates.

For green fees, use current booking information rather than an old article or social media post. Confirm what your booking covers and whether any requested extras involve separate charges.

Raise equipment hire, caddie requests and mobility requirements early, with availability and conditions confirmed directly with the course. These details are better settled before your flights and accommodation are locked in.

When comparing holiday options, distinguish between a transport booking and a golf package. Our transfer-only services do not include green fees or tee times unless they are expressly included in your confirmed arrangements.

Set aside a generous half-day for your round rather than counting playing time alone. Leave space to check in, warm up and pause afterwards. Ask about expected pace before attaching a fixed lunch reservation to the end of the round.

When to visit and what to pack

For golfers seeking warmer conditions and longer days, summer is an appealing starting point. Tasmania’s warmest months generally run from December through March, although changing weather remains part of travelling here. Spring and autumn also deserve consideration when choosing your preferred dates.

Rather than packing for a forecast temperature alone, prepare for a day outdoors. Bring comfortable golf shoes, layers, a waterproof jacket, sun protection, spare gloves and a small towel. Keep the items you may need during the round accessible, rather than buried beneath luggage.

In cooler months, leave more flexibility around daylight and post-round plans. Whatever the season, check the forecast close to play and follow the course’s advice about conditions.

Private transfers from Hobart Airport and hotels

A golf group needs more than enough seats. Golf bags, protective travel covers and suitcases all need to be considered when choosing transport.

Our 7 Mile Beach golf transfers connect Hobart Airport, city hotels and the course. Vehicles are selected around passenger numbers and the complete luggage load, with enclosed trailers arranged where required. Return and onward journeys can be booked together.

Send your flight details, accommodation address, tee time and bag numbers when enquiring. Mention any planned lunch stop or onward travel at the same time, rather than adding it to an already tight schedule.

For a group organiser, we recommend confirming one shared itinerary before collecting everyone’s final travel details. Agreeing the essentials early leaves fewer decisions for the morning of your round.

Where to stay and what to do beyond golf

Hobart suits travellers who would like their golf holiday to include evenings in the city. Waterfront hotels such as MACq 01 and The Henry Jones Art Hotel, or The Tasman nearby, are among the options highlighted by 7 Mile Beach itself.

Choose accommodation around the whole group’s priorities. Consider twin-share arrangements, breakfast timing, restaurant access and whether non-golfing partners would prefer to explore independently while others play.

MONA, Battery Point and Salamanca provide options away from the fairways. A longer stay also creates room for an unhurried meal rather than squeezing every experience between golf and an airport transfer.

For additional rounds, Royal Hobart Golf Club and Tasmania Golf Club offer contrasting southern options. Explore our Hobart golf courses guide and coordinate the movements through our Hobart golf transfers service.

Planning a relaxed Hobart golf weekend

For a shorter escape, we suggest arriving the afternoon before your first round. Check into your hotel, enjoy dinner together and start the following morning without an airport connection hanging over the tee time.

Make 7 Mile Beach the centrepiece of the next day. Reserve the evening for a good meal and time to compare the shots everyone remembers differently.

Use the following day for another southern course, a return round or sightseeing. Decide that priority before booking a flight home.

For mixed groups, ask non-golfers what would make the trip special, then work backwards from one or two shared experiences. A relaxed dinner together may matter more than organising identical days.

Our planning preference is to leave one open stretch in the itinerary. It gives the group space to linger over lunch, recover after travelling or simply enjoy where they are. A little breathing room can turn a good golf break into a genuinely memorable holiday.

Combining 7 Mile Beach with Barnbougle

A north-and-south itinerary lets you experience 7 Mile Beach alongside Barnbougle Dunes, Lost Farm and Bougle Run. Barnbougle’s northeast coastal setting provides a natural counterpart to a Hobart stay.

Allow each destination enough time. This should feel like a golf holiday, not a test of how much driving and playing can fit into one day.

Lost Farm has a distinctive 20-hole layout, while Bougle Run offers a 14-hole short-course experience. Including the shorter course can add variety without making every golf day follow the same pattern.

A practical option is to arrive in Launceston and depart from Hobart, or reverse the journey when building a tailored trip. Choose the direction around confirmed golf and accommodation availability rather than booking flights first and hoping everything fits.

Our Barnbougle transfers and southern services can form one coordinated transport itinerary.

A five-day Tasmania golf escape

Our 5-Day Barnbougle & 7 Mile Beach Golf Escape starts in Launceston and finishes in Hobart.

The itinerary begins with Barnbougle Dunes, followed by Lost Farm. Day three combines Bougle Run with Tamar Valley wine tasting before a Launceston overnight stay. The journey then continues south for whisky experiences and Hobart, with MONA subject to operating days. A final round at 7 Mile Beach completes the trip.

Core starts from $4,299 per person, including four nights’ twin-share accommodation, the four courses, private transport and listed experiences. Meals are at your own expense.

Pinnacle starts from $4,999 per person and adds four breakfasts and four three-course dinners. Lunches remain excluded.

Prices are in Australian dollars, include GST and are based on at least four guests. Advertised rates apply to travel until 30 June 2027; later dates are quoted individually. Availability, final arrangements and any supplements are confirmed when booking.

What is next for 7 Mile Beach?

A second layout, the North Course, is planned with King Collins Dormer. The project is intended to introduce a different style of golf across gentler terrain, complementing the South Course.

For now, plan your visit around the South Course. Future opening dates should be confirmed before including another round in a travel itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 Mile Beach open to visiting golfers?

Yes. The South Course welcomes visitors from Tasmania, interstate and overseas. Book ahead and check the available playing days for your dates rather than assuming every day is open.

Can we play on the day we arrive in Hobart?

Potentially, provided your flight, baggage collection, transfer and tee time allow enough breathing room. We recommend confirming the complete schedule first and avoiding a plan that depends on everything running perfectly.

Can we travel directly from 7 Mile Beach to Barnbougle?

Yes, private onward transfers can be arranged. Treat the journey as a substantial part of your day and discuss stops and arrival plans when requesting your quote.

Are golf clubs and luggage included in transport planning?

Yes. Tell us your passenger numbers and how many golf bags, travel covers and suitcases you are bringing. The vehicle and any trailer need to match the full load, not just the seat count.

How many days should we allow?

We suggest two or three nights for a Hobart-focused break, or five days and longer to combine southern golf with Barnbougle. Add time for repeat rounds, non-golfing partners or a more relaxed pace.
